Members of the Missouri legislature are traveling to San Diego, California this week to attend the annual meeting of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a national corporate lobbying group which pushes policies such as so-called Right-to-Work and Stand Your Ground. The conference will take place at the Manchester Grand Hyatt, which describes itself as “the largest urban waterfront resort on the West Coast.”

“If a city or county sees a problem, it should be able to solve it through a local solution, especially if the state government won’t do anything about it,” said Lara Granich, Executive Director of Missouri Jobs With Justice. “The groundswell of support in Kansas City and St. Louis for raising the minimum wage, and strong leadership by community leaders, is a perfect example of good policy happening as Jefferson City politicians drag their feet.”

This Shark Week, community leaders from GRO - Grass Roots Organizing, Empower Missouri, Communities Creating Opportunity (CCO) and Missouri Faith Voices will rally in front of Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer’s district office as part of National People’s Action’s Shark Week Campaign to Stop Predatory Lending Attacks.

Today at Kindred Hospital Northland, workers, faith leaders and community leaders marked the 25th anniversary of Justice for Janitors day with a rally and press conference calling on city officials to pass a strong city wage ordinance that outlines a clear path to a $15 minimum wage.
