Representative Tracy McCreery (D-Olivette) recently filed HB 1161 for Missouri workers in order to fix holes in the Family Medical Leave Act. A better Missouri Family Leave Act is necessary to help employees manage their dual responsibilities in the workplace and the home. Such legislation leads to healthier employees, children and families.
Five reasons this is awesome:
Less than 12% of workers in the US have access to paid family leave through their employers.
Fewer than 40% have access to personal medical leave through employer-provided short-term disability insurance.
Laws providing paid family and medical leave allow workers to meet their health and family needs without jeopardizing their economic security.
There are several models that pave the way for the change Missouri needs. These models address a workers' own illness and the needs of family caregivers.
In California, for example, a 2011 report revealed that six years after the introduction of a statewide paid family leave program, both workers and businesses reported positive effects.
Anyone may need time away from work as a result of serious personal or family illness. Nearly all Missouri legislators claim to support family values. McCreery’s bill to extend Missouri's family and medical leave would be a great place to put action behind their words.
