Top 4 Ways MoLeg Can Honor Moms This Mother’s Day

With only a week left of session, the Missouri Legislature still has major work to do. Today as we reflect on the significance of mothers, we also call on our legislators to take action on legislation that will honor Missouri mothers.

These are the top four ways #MoLeg can honor moms before the end of this legislative session.

1. Eliminate the Gender Wage Gap


Women still earn less money than men for the same work. Representative Stephen Webber (D-Columbia) has sponsored a bill that would create best practice guidelines in gender pay equality for state and local government and private businesses. This is a great start. Webber referenced a study where it was found that on average, women make 29% less than a man in an equal position. Working mothers are losing money each year that could be going toward their household income, food, bills, healthcare. When Missouri pays women less, citizens suffer.

2. Livable Wages


Not only are women making less money than their male counterparts, Missouri’s state workers are the lowest paid in the country. Individuals who work for the state often have to take multiple jobs just to support themselves and their family. Even states that have a lower cost of living than Missouri pay their state workers a higher income. With wages so low, working mothers often have to make difficult financial decisions:

“Every two weeks I get paid I got to make a decision on whose not going to get paid or are the kids going to eat today and I might have to eat a sandwich or something,” said Jones.  “I’m tired of my kids raising themselves, I need to be there with my kids.”-Juma Jones, Developmental Assistant at Bellefontaine Habilitation Center

Jayda (pictured above) came to the capitol last week with her grandmother to ask the legislature to act, she says: "My Granny works for the state, we are fighting for a pay increase so my Granny can take care of our family." 

Working mothers should not have to decide between working extra hours, which bills to pay, or spending time with their families. State workers should be able  earn a livable wage from one job, not three.

3. MONA
Sponsored by Rep. Webber, the Missouri Nondiscrimination Act (MONA) would add lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals to the Missouri Human Rights Statute. Families are put at risk without MONA protections. Without MONA, people can still be fired for being gay, denied housing, and refused public accommodations all because they are LGBT. When LGBT moms and individuals are discriminated against, not only does it affect them, but it harms their family. If Missouri cares about family values, they need to care about ALL families.

4. Medicaid Expansion


Missouri mothers need Medicaid expansion. There are currently 300,000 Missourians who fall into the coverage gap, meaning they don’t make enough money to qualify for subsidies of the Affordable Care Act, and make too much money to qualify for Medicaid. Women’s health care needs to become a priority in Missouri. We cannot expect for our children and families to be healthy when Missouri women and mothers are not able to access reliable, consistent, affordable health care.

As we inch closer towards the end of legislative session, we can’t forget our mothers along the way. Let’s show Missouri mothers that their sacrifices have not gone unnoticed.
