Stephen Webber moves to address gender pay inequality

Missouri women earn an average of 80 cents for every dollar paid to men in the workforce, a gap that exists even in jobs where women make up the majority of workers.

That’s just wrong.

Rep. Stephen Webber (D-Columbia) has filed a bill (HB 44) that would take a solid step toward righting that wrong in Missouri. The bill would direct the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations to write a “best practices” guide addressing four subjects: defining gender pay equity, explaining why it occurs, lay out the benefits of equity, and detail the ways to achieve pay equity.

“If you look at gender pay inequality, it is clear it exists,” Webber said. “It is clear that it is harmful economically, and there are best practices that can reduce that gap.”
