The Pro-Discrimination Hearing that Wasn't

A funny thing happened on the way to recording a hearing on Sen. Kurt Schaefer’s (R-Columbia) pro-discrimination Senate Bill 916.

This is unusual. As a matter of fact, it's the first time something like this has happened this session. The hearing room was full, our fearless Research Director Sheela was in place with her camera setup and ready to go. And then at the last minute, Sen. Bob Dixon (R-Springfield) announced SB 916 wouldn’t be heard because there were witnesses who weren’t able to attend.

The bill, aka “Religious Freedom Restoration Act,” would open the door to all kinds of discrimination--and under the guise of religion, make it perfectly legal to discriminate against anyone based on race, gender, religious preference, etc.

Stay tuned. We have a feeling this one’s not over.
